Reason For Vengeance

Well it has been a proper days work today.  Start at 9.00 am, hour break for lunch and finish at 6.00 pm.  I was editing all day.  I started at page 103 and set myself a target of 120 pages - 15 pages an hour.  Not unreasonable and I'm really happy as I made it all the way to page 244.  This will save me a couple of hours tomorrow.

Now I have the difficult decision of do I publish tomorrow?

I know I can make all the changes by end of play but the question is - have I caught all the errors?

A couple of good friends of mine are working on it as beta readers and I doubt they will be back before the end of August.  That will delay me a month and all the people I have told about the book are expecting it tomorrow.

I honestly don't know what to do.  If I do delay it will give me a chance to re-write the Prologue as I'm not that happy with it.  It was one of the first parts I wrote and it's not that great.  I can clearly see how much better my writing is in the second half of the book.

That in itself is a good reason.  It would be the first part any agent reads and available for free as the first 10% of the book on Amazon.  A poor first chapter could mean the difference between success and failure.

Hmm.  I think I have just answered my own question.

Reason For Vengeance

Yersterday - Bloody awful.  There is no other way to describ it.  I did nothing other than play lots of Settlers and watch about 7 episodes of Nashville.

Today was a proper day.  Started poorly to be fair as I spent the first couple of hours on Settlers again - Really enjoying that by the way.

11.00 am I got serious and started editing.  I managed thirty pages by lunch with fifity after before getting destracted again for an hour.  It is scary how little it takes to throw me off.  I made up for it by working until 7.00 pm though so I have put in a seven hour day and completed 100 pages of editing.

With the difficulty I have had writting over the past few weeks it has been getting to me and I have not felt any new and fresh ideas.  Today though some good solid stuff has been occurring to me as I re-read the manuscript.  They have all been jotted down so I don't forget and it gives me hope for the future.

Tomorrow I will need to do a solid eight hours or more if I want to meet my 31st of July publication date.  I have got to keep pushing and aim for 120 pages.

Reason For Vengeance

Well it is official.  I have completely lost the plot.  When I should have been working hard on Return I haven't been.  Time to fix that.

I got the first edited copy back on Reason so I'm going to spend the next couple of days going through that.

On a more positive note I had an excellent day with my daughter Saturday and a great day out at the Silverstone Classic with my Dad on Sunday.  I saw some fantastic cars.  There were so many there, by the end you were like "oh it's another E-Type or Austin Healey."

I think the rarest car there was probably the Jenson Interceptor.  There was only one there.

Return For Vengeance

Well new day and renewed focus.  I did my full calisthenics and weights workout:

70 push ups
70 sit ups
7 pull ups
3 x 35 bicep curls
2 x 10 (I don't know what these are called)
2 x 15 tricep curls
2 x 10 (I don't know what these are called)
3 x 50 (I don't know what these are called)
3 minute plank

After that a 30 min, 3 and half mile run.  Not my best time.  I was 7.5 min mileing it last year before I busted my ankle coming off a climbing wall.

Usual target for today - 5,000 words and I will need to push hard as I need to finish early today.  I am babysitting my daughter tonight.

Sunday

It has been a very nice and relaxing Sunday.  Cut the grass, played Total War: Empire, watched the Grandprix and relaxed in the sun.  What more could you ask for?

What a great race today.  20th to 3rd is an amazing run for Hamilton and Botta's drive was flawless.  I could not believe Massa though.  He shoudl have known better.  It was the first corner and the chance of some one being there was very likely.  In my opinion he cost Williams another twelve points in the constructors championship.

Return For Vengeance

Well it is Saturday and a day off for me.  I had a good morning with my daughter playing hide and seek among other things.  Her vocabulary is coming on leaps and bounds.  The look on her face when I understand what she is say is amazing.

After taking her back to her mother's I watched the F1 qualifying.  Shame for Hamilton and very good for Williams.  I reckon they are going to end the season in 2nd place after Mercedes.  Pretty good for a team who had their worst year ever last year.

In the afternoon I felt so guilty about not doing a full days work yesterday I wrote 600 words and finished the scene I had been writing.  Now I need to put some thought into what happens next as it could be procedural.  Do I just let it run or skip straight to a more interesting bit that moves the plot forward?

Total now at 16,000 words.

Return For Vengeance

Bah.  I let my self get distracted and I haven't got back into the zone after lunch.  It is now very hot and I think I am going to call it a day.

Total 15,500 words

Susie Wolff

I must admit.  I have always wondered how much Susie's appointment at Williams is PR.  I have nothing against woman drivers, not in the slightest and I would love to see more.

What has concerned me is that compared to other drivers she has not had the success in other Formulas.  Her two best years were 5th in Formula Renault UK and 13th in DTM.  Not exactly the resume of an F1 driver.  Even the test drivers have won championships in the lower formulas.  The other thing going against her is her age, at 32 she would actually be one of the oldest drivers on the grid.  As Michael Schumacher proved, age does slow you down and experience can only compensate for so much.

Anyway I got a little far off track there.  My point is that she is only 2 10th's off Felipe Massa's time at FP1 in Hockenheim this morning.  For a driver on their first proper outing in the car that is incredibly good.  I say that is a good evidence she has earned her place.

Return For Vengeance

That is a lot more like it.  I had the flow going properly today and managed 5,500 words.

All the prep work I had done yesterday worked a treat.  You don't always know if what you imagine is actually going to make sense or be logical until you write it out.  It did today and I'm 80% sure I have enough for tomorrow as well.  After that I'm not so sure.

Update from yesterday?  Epic failure.  I competely lost my mojo and could not get it back so I didn't write a word after my last post.  I'm very glad today worked as I wanted it to.

13,000 words and counting.  I'm aiming for the 150,000 word count again so some way to go.

Return For Vengeance

First off Return is the working title, I am also considering Crusade.  I'll let that one simmer for a bit and come back to it nearer the time.

My grand plan time scale has this ready for publishing at the end of November and I have gotten an early start on it so I might be able to bring it forward.

As to that start it hasn't been easy.  I mapped out the first half of the book on Monday morning 07/07/14 and struggled to write 500 words in a day and half.
Wednesday and Thursday I had booked with my daughter so nothing done there.
Friday I had an appointment with a employment consult, paid for as part of my redundancy package.  In the morning I had to go through all this paperwork, manuals and websites.  It was so depressing I managed to knock out a 1000 words in an hour.

The meeting was very informative and particularly useful in building a digital profile which I am now working on daily.  To be honest this blog is more personal to keep me motivated.

Monday was back to it and I struggled through 2000 words.

Tuesday was better - 3000 words.  It feels like I am getting back up to speed.  There is certainly a rhythm to writing and it take time to back to it.

Today not so good so far.  I gave myself a target of 4000 and I have only done 1000 but I have mapped out the next action sequence so not as bad as it sounds.  Why am I writing a blog and not working?  Well I've had a guy in to do the cavity wall insulation and it really broke my concentration.  He's only just left so I'll get back to work right now.

Reason For Vengeance

I haven't been blogging for a month, I'm not sure why, I think I just lost the drive for it.  Well new start and all that.  I've moved all the posts from my personal e-mail account to one dedicated to the books and I will be posting regularly from here.

First of all an update on Reason.  It topped out at 144,000 words on the first draft and after my own first edit finished at 148,000.  It is now off with three people who are very kindly acting as my Alpha readers.  Hopefully I'll get some good feedback from them.

Since then I have been at a bit of a loose end as I did not plan to be sitting here without anything to work on during July.  I have been doing some work like listing publishers and literary agents for when I am ready but nothing directly involved in the writing.

That has now changed and it is time to get started on book two - Return For Vengeance.

I wrote another 6,000 words today, that makes it 28,000 this week and my brain needs a rest.
I started today off with a short run, my first since Sep/Oct last year so I kept it to a light 2.5 miles.  With all my cycling, my cardo was fine despite the heat but my ankle did start to complain in the last half mile.  I think that is a good thing and means as long as I don't push it too far too fast I should be able to re-build its strength.  I came off a climbing wall back in October and sprained it quite badly.  It has done well with everything else but I wasn't sure about running on it so I left a good long while.
Oh what was I going to talk about?  Ah yes the lego catalogue.  One of the many joys of having a young daughter.  I bought a couple of her birthday presents directly from lego as they were difficult to get hold of.  Decent non-traditional girl characters just aren't in the shops.  So anyway it turns up completely out of the blue and I did spend an enjoyable five minutes looking through it.  It was tempting, particularly the classic starwars stuff or Beji's Spaceship from the lego movie.  I was sure when I watched that my brother and I had that set when we were kids.
I finished the day off with watching Transformers, the Michael Bay version.  It must be something like the 10th time I've seen it and I still enjoyed every minute.
Hmm, F1 Show and bed I think.  I'm really interested to see what Johnnie Herbert and the others think about the Massa/Perez crash in Canada last weekend.

For the first time I finished well ahead of budget at 6,200 words with an hour to spare so I was able to go sit in the sun for a bit.
I was going to talk about the joy of getting the lego catelogue through today but I am just too tired and I am going to bed.
123,500 words and counting.

Today was the third solid day of writing in a row and I am certainly feeling it.  The good thing is that I wrote another 5,000 words and brought my total up to 117,000.
The plan is to keep pushing through the next two days and see how I am after a weekends rest.  In theory I can hit my target of 150,000 for the first book by the end of next week.  We'll just have to see if that is possible.
On day at a time.  That's my motto.

The writing went well and I finished another section along with having a good lead into the next one.  This section was possibly to be my last but I'm not sure now as I would really like to get to 150,000 words as a total.  I guess I will see how it goes and make a decision when I get to the end.
I had an phone call from my Mum, I gave her a 17,000 word extract that I had written fairly early on.  She's not a Scifi/fantasy fan at all but she said it was good.  The story didn't work for her but it flowed well, read easily and she understood what I was trying to say.  That was very encouraging.
Now at 112,000 and counting.

I had a good days writing and did the 5,000 words I wanted to and more importantly I've now got this section mapped out in my head.  I just need to make sure I don't do a carbon copy of a bit I have already done.  As I am writing this I can see I've used a similar scenario.  I think it will work; I just need to be careful about how it plays out.  Total now at 106,500 words.

Friday morning was spent working on the book once more and I added another 2,500 words.  This meant that in my first full week, due to already pre-planned things, I did 2 full days and wrote 11,000 words which is 1,000 more than I budgeted.  My total is now at 101,500 and I think that is a good start.  My goal is 5,000 words a day and by the end of this week I plan to be at 126,500.  We'll have to see how I get on.
I left for Manchester at 2.00 pm, thinking that it should take me about 3 hours and I could then sit in a local Sainsbury's and write while I waited for my friend to finish work.  It was a nightmare journey in the end with traffic all the way from Junction 14 of the M6, right to his door and took me 5 hours.  Not good.  It did get better after that, we went out and hit a few pubs and six pints later had a good night.
Saturday was a chill out day with a bit of a weird end to it.  My friend and I were planning on doing not a lot as we were both knackered, his wife was off to meet a couple of friends for dinner and at the last minute she decided that we should go with them.  It was a pleasant evening, though I don't think the two of us were great company as we were so tired.
Sunday morning I was up at seven thirty and spent a very peaceful hour sitting on the wall of my friends 5th floor balcony in the sun looking over Manchester City centre.  I was surprised that no one else in the surrounding flats had taken the opportunity.  I guess they were fast asleep.
After picking up our other friend we headed to Outlon Park and with a bit of skilful navigating arrived well in time for the first race.  The BTCC races were a bit of a let-down as they had changed the track and it made over taking very difficult.  In the first two races I think we only saw a handful moves and they were further down the field.  We had a massive down pour before the third race and that did spice things up.  Aron Smith was on Pole due to the reverse grid and he drove a perfect race, not putting a wheel wrong on a very slippery track.  Behind him it was all going on and a great race.
The day finished with the Super Touring Cars with vehicles from the 90's and that was fun to watch these classic cars going flat out, not much different in speed to the current generation.
The journey back was much better in 2 hours and 20 mins and that was without speeding at all.  It was such a clear run.
Now I really do need to get on.  It is 10.30 and I haven't written a word of the book yet.  I had a well-deserved lay in and new washing machine delivered and fitted.
Right the target for today is 106,500 words.  I'll let you know how I get on.

I was a good day, potty buying in the morning as she is at that stage and a trip to the nursery she is starting in September in the morning.  The rest of the day was spent playing as well as all those parent things you do.  Nappies, lunch, drink, nap time etc.
I enjoyed the film last night.  I think the route they have taken with X-Men since the Last Stand is kind of working.  Rather than trying to push the team storyline they have been bouncing around all over the place and that has kept it fresh.  Days of Future Past tied in all six (no I can't believe it is six either) of the other films in and left them plenty of room to carry on if they wanted to.  To a film fan it probably seems a bit contrived but as a DC Comic fan for the last fifteen years I am kind of used to it.
My one grip and is that it did not have enough action and a Superhero film that seems a little odd.  I didn't actually think of that until this morning so I'm not sure if it counts.

Started with shave and teeth, did that.  Calesthenics next, push ups, sits ups and chin ups.  That all felt good so moved onto the weights and I got through the full routine.
Now I was really up for it so a quick breakfast then onto the bike and 22 miles later I was feeling top of the world.
To be fair all of that took a far bit out of me so I was a bit slow to getting to the writing and I didn't sit down until 10.30.  With a break for lunch I managed to work all the way through to 6.30 pm and I really felt I could keep going.
I did get confused at one point.  I said yesterday that I had done 3,500 words and I could only see 2,400.  It took me a while to figure out that I had saved the book to my back up flash drive and not to the computer.  Fortunately it was only a single section of writing and not any editing so it was easy to drop back in.
After all was said and done I finished another complete section.  At 5,000 words it was not a long one but it's another mile stone and I am really pleased with what I've written.  That is nine sections down and three to go, though I am starting to think the last one could go into book two.  We'll see where the story goes.
Total now at 99,000 words.
Off to see X-man days of Future Past.  I feel I've earned it.
Oh I've just had another idea for a story and I think this one has legs.  That's one on the go, two definites and a maybe.  I know it is only day two but I really feel this could work.

That's the first day of my new life done.  I didn't do my budgeted 5,000 words though.  That was because I had to sort out more this morning than I thought, including an hour and a half round trip to get a matress for my daughters bed.  That is all set up now so when she is round mine on Wednesday she won't be in the cot for her nap.
I didn't sit down until 2.30 pm and it took me almost half an hour to catch up on the section I wanted to continue writing.  The last time I worked on that bit was over 2 months ago, maybe longer so it took some time to get it straight in my head.  In the end I am pleased with what I've done today, considering it has been a half day - almost 3,500 words.
Tomorrow will be a full day so we'll see how I do.  Can I manage the full 5,000 or better yet 6,000 or 7,000?  We will see.

As I suspected I wasn’t able to get any writing done last night.  I did do another 800 words this morning before 8.40 am and having to go to work.  I am pleased about that and it is still coming fairly smoothly.  Keep pushing, that is the name of the game.  I am not going to be able to do any tonight so I’ve got to make sure I do as much as possible tomorrow morning.
I went to Karate last night.  We were doing defensive side kicks and it really is the simplest things that make the difference.  I have been struggling to keep my balance so I just could not do double kicks.  All I had to do was point my rear foot in the same direction of my knee and it just changed my balance completely.
We then moved onto Pinan Shodan.  We had covered the first 10 moves over the last couple of weeks and with practise at home I had the basics down.  I still need to tidy a lot of it up but I’m pretty happy with where I am.  We then went into the other 14 moves.  They are fairly simple and we have covered each individual one before so I think I can pick it up.  The problem is that I could only actually remember the 11 to 20 ish.  I have no idea what the last bits are.
Internet research is in order I think.

Karate tonight along with Orphan Black and 24 so not there won't be much writing done.  Nor tomorrow as I won't get home until 8pm and its an earlier start in the morning.  Friday won't be a good writing day either as I having my 'leaving do' in the evening.  I should be able to get 500 to 1000 words done in the morning and that will push me close to the 90,000 word mark.
Keep pushing until Monday and then the real work begins.

I now have four more working days until I am officially a full time writer.  Of course you could also call me unemployed but hey ho.
In the spare few hours I had today I put in about 2,500 words.  All reasonable stuff I think and it takes me to the grand total of 85,000 words and more importantly I am actually close to finishing the third section of the book.  That doesn't sound like much really unless you know that there are at the moment twelve sections and I have written one, two, four, five, six and seven.  It was easier to start with seven as I really didn't have the first half mapped out in my head.
Hanna who is a new character that I introduce in section seven just seemed to jump out at me at the time so it made sense to get on with that bit and come back to the beginning.
I think I am past the half way point now and now that I have quit my job I can get on with it.  My plan is for June to be a pure writing month and have the first draft finished by the 30th of June.  I then spend July rewriting and editing for a July 31st publishing date.
It is very scary and I will keep you up to date!
